Culminating Blog

Volunteering at Hillside preschool and working with the children was somewhat challenging for me. At times I would lose my patience and get frustrated with them because they did not always want to listen. They would constantly disobey the rules and wondered off and did whatever it is they wanted to do. I quickly learned that children had a mind of their own. Due to their actions, my mentor advised me that if they did not want to listen, they would have to sit in a chair at the corner as a punishment.

I overcame these challenges by working and learning to control myself. Each time I visited the preschool, I dealt with children not wanting to always listen to me or my mentor who is the teacher. I learned to have patience through watching how she handle the situations in a calm way. One can not talk to these children as if they were their age because they are much younger. Overall, my main problem was dealing with my limitations of patience and learning how each individual student interacted and responded to authority.

Through this experience, I feel as if my character has grown by becoming more patient in general. I can deal with children more calmly and not get as frustrated with them when they have difficulty following directions. Instead of getting irritated and angry with the kids, I learned to communicate with them and to be more considerate because of their age. I learned that I must to talk to them in a way that they will listen and understand me. Learning to interact with students on a one to one basis gives me an advantage and I was able to gain their trust and attention.

May 6th, 2014

Today, Tuesday May 6th, was my final day to volunteer at Hillside Preschool. I am sad to say that today was my last day to work with children. When I got there today, I told the kids that today would be my last day, they have been knowing this for a few days now. They were upset so I told them that we could take pictures so that we wouldn't forget each other. To be honest it broke my heart because I grew to be attached to them and I am going to miss coming every week to play with them. I feel as if I have learned quite a bit from volunteering here such as being patient and learning how to work with young children. This project gave the experience of working with younger children and I very much enjoyed it.

March 21, 2014

On Tuesday we stayed inside most of the day because it was raining. The children had a lot of energy because they didn't go out to the playground because of the rain. Some began to run around inside and things because hectic. We had some kids getting hurt because they were running inside the small classroom. So i decided to distract them by playing a card game. I helped the kids play the game Uno. They don't really know how to play so I tried to teach them and they got the hang of it which made the game fun and exciting! By the time I go back to help out at the preschool, the kids should already know how to play that game.

March 18th, 2014

Tuesday March 18th, was my actual last day of hours, however I're grown fond of the children and I will continue to be going until May or June. When I got there, the children asked if we could play jump rope and so i began to swing the rope. I began to sing the song Cinderella and I didn't the kids had remembered the song but they did. My mentor said they had been singing and jumping all week so they would know it by the time I came to do my hours and they sure did know it. My mentor told me that some of the kids were tripping and so that they wouldn't fall hard she told me to have them go more in the middle of the rope. The kids have the tendency to stay on the side near to where I am turning the rope and they have a chance of falling. I told them that only two kids can jump at a time so no one would be near the ends.

March 11, 2014

Today I taught the kids how to sing the song Cinderella while they are playing jump rope. Some of the children already knew it so the other ones tried to copy their words and sing along. My mentor advised me to teach them the song first and then to go ahead and jump and sing it. We kept repeating the song over and over again and by the end of the day most of the kids had learned the song. They were pretty excited about it and they wanted to show their parents what they had learned today. So when each of the kids parents came to pick them up, the kids had their turn to show them that they can sing and jump rope. The next time I go I am planning on teaching them the song "Teddy Bear", before we begin to jump rope.

Feburary 18, 2014

When I got to the preschool, I was happy to see the kids and so were they. Every time I go they always come and give me hugs and ask if I can play with them. We went to play on the swings and they all wanted to have a turn but some were getting mad and pushing because they wanted to go first. My mentor suggested that I should have them form a line in alphabetic order. I did just that and they seemed to be fine with it. However, some didn't want to get off the swing after their turn was up so I told them they would have another turn after everyone went. I was kind of unsure about that because I wasn't sure if the kids were going to be okay with that and I didn't know if they would all be able to have a second turn because we had a few minutes before we had to go inside. I spoke with my mentor and she said she would give us more time until everyone went twice. From now on if they want more time on the swings, I'm going to give them two turns.

Twelfth Day February 4th, 2014

February 4th was my twelve day at the preschool. When I got their the director of the school, who is my mentor as well, told me that the kids had been asking for me. They all ran up to me when i got there, it was as if they hadn't seen me in weeks when it was only days. As always my mentor always gives me advice on how to act towards the kids. For example if they need a piece of type they have to ask and say please and thank you so that their manners will evolve and stay with them. Each time I go theres always some type of situation where it involves using manners and almost everything we do on a daily basis involves using manners.
